Bringing
Former Nebraskans Home Since 2005
there are opportunities in Nebraska, and
we believe that there will be even more in the months
to come. Here are examples:
'Site Selection Magazine Features New
Nebraska Programs'
(Business Facilities Magazine) -- Business Facilities
Magazine, billed as the "premier source for corporate
real estate and site selection news," has published
a feature story on Nebraska's new Talent & Innovation
Initiative, passed and signed last month. According
to the article, "When the Battelle Technology Partnership
Practice recently conducted a Competitive Advantage
Assessment for Nebraska, it identified a troubling anomaly:
the state is doing a great job of producing graduates
with advanced degrees in engineering, computer science,
life sciences, business and financebut the number
of graduates is 'well above the level of job openings
found in Nebraska.'" As a result, Gov. Dave Heineman
"introduced a series of initiatives to advance
business innovation and workforce recruitment efforts
in the Cornhusker State." http://www.businessfacilities.com/articles/nebraska-nurtures-talent-and-innovation.php
'Report: Lincoln No. 1 on list of top
cities for college grads'
(Lincoln Journal Star) -- JournalStar.com reports that
"a website that ranks U.S. cities based on how
attractive they are to college graduates has ranked
Lincoln No. 1." According to the story, "Livability.com's
Top 10 Cities for College Grads ranks cities based on
such criteria as available jobs, cost of living, salaries,
population, age and culture." Wendy Birdsall, president
of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, "said she was
glad to see many outside Nebraska had begun identifying
Lincoln as a great place to live and work."

'State economists: Neb. income expected
to surpass U.S. average'
(Lincoln Journal Star) -- JournalStar.com reports that
"Nebraska Business Forecast Council on Wednesday
released an updated economic forecast that predicts
rising per-capita incomes and steady job growth."
The article notes: "Per-capita income in Nebraska
is predicted to exceed to the national average either
this year or next. That hasn't happened in decades."
Much of the reason for that is due to "Nebraska's
higher labor force participation rate" than that
of most other states. One troubling sign, according
to the story: a sluggish housing sector, as home sales
fell about 14% in both Lincoln and Omaha in 2010.

'Nebraska website gathers job listings'
(Omaha World-Herald) -- Omaha.com that the State of
Nebraska is using internet technology "to better
link job-seekers and employers on an updated website
that gathers all job listings in Nebraska." According
to the story, the "NEworks" website was recently
updated with $2.8 million in federal grants and serves
as a "'one-stop shop' for all job listings in Nebraska,"
addressing one of the state's weaknesses identified
by last year's Battelle economic study. "The new
website neworks.nebraska.gov had 23,830
job openings posted Wednesday," the World-Herald
notes.

'Nebraska economists see growth'
(Omaha World-Herald) -- Omaha.com reports that "a
team of Nebraska economists is upbeat about the state's
prospects for job and income growth in 2011." They
say that growth could "accelerate in 2012,"
thanks in large part to farm income." The story
notes that the economists predict Nebraska's non-farm
job growth will jump 1.3% in 2011 and 1.8% in 2012,
and that "by 2012, jobs will have exceeded pre-recession
levels of 2008."

'Can't Find A Good Job? Try Nebraska'
(Juju.com) -- Juju.com, a leading job search engine,
has just released its "Job Search Difficulty Index
for the States." Nebraska is ranked at the fourth
best state for a successful job search, according to
the index. The Cornhusker State is topped only by the
District of Columbia, Virginia, and North Dakota. Job
search conditions are most competitive in Nevada, Idaho
and Michigan. The index measures the difficulty of finding
employment in each state. It was calculated by dividing
the number of unemployed workers in each state by the
number of jobs in a comprehensive index of millions
of online jobs in the United States.

'Reversing the trend: Nebraskas
brain gain'
(Omaha World-Herald) -- Omaha.com this morning reports,
"Thanks in large part to its status as a haven
amid the nation's economic turmoil, Nebraska last year
was able to put a plug in its longtime 'brain drain.'"
The story notes that "after decades of watching
its best and brightest leave the state," the U.S.
Census Bureau says "Nebraska in 2009 posted a net
gain of college graduates through migration," with
about 1,600 more college grads moving into the state
instead of moving out. "The numbers bode well for
Nebraska's economic future, too, said J.B. Milliken,
president of the University of Nebraska system."
Overall, "some 10,000 more people moved into Nebraska
than moved out during 2009, also reversing the historical
trend." <http://omaha.com/article/20101029/NEWS01/710299892/1009#nebraska-s-brain-gain>

Careers
For the second consecutive year, Nebraska has landed
a top-ten ranking in Forbes Magazines "Best
States for Business and Careers" list. The 2010

were weighted the most heavily. Nebraska scored particularly
well in the categories of business costs (No. 6), economic
climate (No. 12) and quality of life (No. 14). Utah,
Virginia and North Carolina topped this years
Forbes list; Maine, Mississippi and Rhode Island were
the worst three states.

Economic rebound expected to pick up
steam in Midwest
(Omaha World-Herald) -- Omaha.com reports that "job
gains and increased inventories helped a leading economic
indicator for Nebraska, Iowa and the region grow to
its highest level in nearly three years." That's
according to the Business Conditions Index for February.
"Readings over the past several months indicate
that the regional economic rebound that is under way
will pick up steam in the months ahead," said Creighton
University economics professor Ernie Goss, according
to Omaha.com. But Goss cautioned that the "economic
headwinds that Europe is facing" could ultimately
hurt the Midlands "major agriculture sector."
Nebraska should see "minimal manufacturing job
gains and very modest overall job gains," Goss
says. See the story at <http://www.omaha.com/article/20100302/MONEY/703029963>

Is Nebraska on the rebound?
(World-Herald News Service/NPTelegraph.com) -- The World-Herald
News Service reports Nebraska could be one of the first
states to emerge from the current recession -- the most
severe in at least the past 30 years. That is according
to Jason Henderson, chief executive for the Federal
Reserve branch in Omaha. Henderson said "regions
of the country that lag going into downturns historically
tend to be the first to emerge." Scott Strain,
an economist with the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce,
said: "When I look at the data, I see improvement
and a suggestion we'll have job growth by the end of
the year." "New jobs posted with the Nebraska
Workforce Development office in Omaha were up 10% in
September over a year ago, an indication that some employers
are returning to the market for workers." But Creighton
University economist Ernie Goss said it "is likely
to take a year for Nebraska to recoup lost jobs,"
and it could take even longer, he said, "depending
on what transpires in Washington in debates on health
care, climate change and taxes." See the World-Herald
